Jesuit Volunteers Australia |
|
JVA supports volunteers to engage with people on the margins and come together to reflect on that experience as they work to build a just society.
The distinctive difference of this volunteer program is that volunteers have the opportunity to integrate their experience with their concern for justice. JVA shares the Jesuit vision of a “faith that does justice”.
Who are the volunteers?
Volunteers come from all walks of life and may volunteer in a vast array of services with Jesuit and non-Jesuit ministries.
JVA volunteers work with those at the margins of our society including people who are:
• homeless
• refugees and new arrivals
• prisoners
• elderly
• socially isolated due to mental illness, poverty and intellectual disability.
JVA Volunteers are;
• People able to commit to regular volunteer activities
• Interested in deepening their understanding of social justice
• Willing to engage in conversation and reflection which will enrich their volunteering experience.
JVA gives people the opportunity to become:
• Agents of change
• Involved in the mission of building a just society
• Involved with others who share similar values
Reflection
JVA reflection times are held monthly. They provide opportunities for volunteers to integrate their experience with their values and concern for justice. The reflection sessions help volunteers grow in their own understanding of what ‘a faith that does justice’ means when it is put into practice in the real situations they face in their volunteer experiences. Reflection offers the possibility that we can flourish in a way that realises our full potential and makes us available to others.
Becoming a Volunteer
If you are already working in direct contact with disadvantaged people and would like the opportunity to reflect upon your experience please consider joing Jesuit Volunteers Australia.
The program currently exists in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. A Coordinator has been appointed in each of these cities to support volunteers in finding suitable placements and coordinate the regular reflections.
