About Support After Suicide
Support After Suicide is a program which aims to increase the availability of timely and appropriate support to families, especially those with young children, who are bereaved through suicide. We do this by both providing support to individuals, families and children who are bereaved through suicide or affected by a suicide, and by resourcing education, health and welfare professionals who have the capacity to support those affected by suicide.

More information and support services can be found at the Support After Suicide website www.supportaftersuicide.org.au

Support Group
The Support After Suicide Group provides an opportunity for people who have been recently suicide bereaved to gain a greater understanding of their situation and to spend time and communicate with others who have also been bereaved as a result of suicide.

Louise Flinn, of Jesuit Social Services, was interviewed as a part of the 2009 Jesuit Lenten Series podcasts.  Click here to listen to her interview about Support After Suicide.

Support for the bereaved
Support After Suicide provides support, counselling and groups to children, young people and adults who are bereaved as a result of suicide. The grief following a suicide can be complex. As a bereaved person you may experience a broad range of thoughts and feelings such as sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, helplessness, despair. It can be an intense experience and you may feel out of control or overwhelmed.

Some people feel well supported by family and friends while others feel isolated, alone, misunderstood and unsupported. Reactions can be many and varied and may seem difficult to understand. In these circumstances it may assist to receive some additional information and support.

This service is free of charge. Please contact staff to discuss individual or family counselling or group support.

We also have available a series of leaflets with helpful information:

Support for Professionals
Many professionals come in contact with people in our community who are bereaved by suicide and are providing support to them. This support may be direct counselling, the provision of information and resources or referral to specific intervention programs. The Support After Suicide project can support professionals in these roles.

Professional Education
Support After Suicide provides innovative and creative education programs to professionals working in the education, health and welfare sectors. The programs aim to increase knowledge of issues relating to suicide bereavement and enhance professionals capacity to respond effectively to people bereaved by suicide.

Secondary Consultation
Secondary consultation - by phone or face-to-face - the provision of information and referral options are available on request. There is also the possibility of staff at the project working jointly with professionals in the education, health and welfare sectors (eg. co-facilitating group interventions).

All of these professional services are free of charge.
