A MARATHON EFFORT

While we hope our supporters get behind our 35th anniversary celebrations here at Jesuit Social Services, we were not expecting everyone to go to the lengths of Will Macnae.

In April, 22 year old Wll, who volunteers at our African Program, will run the grueling 251km Marathon des Sables across the formidable Sahara Desert in Southern Morocco - known as the toughest footrace on Earth - to specifically raise funds for the organisation.

Will told us recently he was prepared to let his running sum up how much he valued the work of Jesuit Social Services, particularly the African programs.

"I began volunteering with Jesuit Social Services three years ago and have witnessed first hand the fantastic work you do to help strengthen newly arrived refugee communities and to foster meaningful relationships between members of the African and Australian communities."

Will said the time was right for his taking part in the event, as his university studies had just ended, he had a growing fondness for running marathons, he had always wanted to visit Africa and he wished to show his respect for the Jesuit Social Services African program.

"I actually hadn't heard about the Marathon des Sables until four months ago. My Dad was born in South Africa and I feel an affinity for the place. I will also be doing some volunteer work in Senegal this year.
