Inquiry into security and violence in hospitals
Jesuit Social Services thought it important to have a say about this issue on behalf of our participants who sometimes present to emergency departments in crisis, whether that be due to alcohol or drug misuse, a mental health crisis or a combination of them both. Jesuit Social Services calls on the Government to provide more training for security guards to better deal with young people in crisis, the consideration of a volunteer squad to assist young people while they're waiting to be seen, and more resources to the CATT mental health teams.

Apology, one year on - 13th February 2009
Jesuit Social Services joins many across the nation in commemorating the first anniversary of the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's apology to members of the Stolen Generations. One year on, the speech remains a watershed in relations between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians. The anniversary is a time to reflect on what we have done over the past year towards eliminating the major disadvantages that continue to face Indigenous people in health, housing, education and employment, and a reminder of the challenges ahead. The apology will not have meaning outside concrete improvements in the lives of Indigenous people, families and communities. Our involvement in supporting young Indigenous people involved with the justice system is a constant reminder of how far we still have to go to create a just society for all Australians.
